Sainsbury’s Whitechapel

Project overview

Twelve’s involvement with the Whitechapel store in London was to create a large scale graphical texture that could be applied to the panels that surround the temporary car park, which is on three levels. The solution had to not only work with the branding, but needed to be sympathetic to the surrounding area.

The chosen design featured silhouettes of popular products coloured in a neutral grey, with the occasional product highlighted in brand orange to add depth and interest. The artwork was designed to repeat every three panels, a width of around 25 metres, this ensured that there was no obvious repeat to the texture. In certain areas the pattern also spread vertically, so we had to ensure there was ultimate flexibility, and where it encroached on the brand we faded it out to a plain white background. This treatment should be visible around the Whitechapel store until 2015.
